Introduction:
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME)
An Internet Standard that extends the format of email to support text in character sets other than US-ASCII, non-text attachments, multi-part message bodies, and header information in non-ASCII character sets. Virtually all human-written Internet e-mail and a fairly large proportion of automated email is transmitted via SMTP in MIME format. Internet email is so closely associated with the SMTP and MIME standards that it is sometimes called SMTP/MIME email.
The content types defined by MIME standards are also of importance outside of email, such as in communication protocols like HTTP for the World Wide Web. HTTP requires that data be transmitted in the context of email–like messages, even though the data may not actually be email.

IkonForums is not email, why have MIME settings?
All files are forbidden from usage unless explicitly referenced in the MIME Type List. The MIME list also instructs how the browser reacts with the file.
Example:
You want to include a midi file as an attachment with your post, for the file–type to have permission to become an attachment it must be entered into Ikonforum's MIME List. Once uploaded, it becomes part of the post as a text link (with identifying graphical icon) and any member who clicks on the link will have the choice to download to their computer (save) or load the file in their media player (open).
